A new lawn is only as good as the ground beneath it. We prepare every site to a greenkeeper's standard, then lay premium cultivated turf for a level, lush, hard-wearing lawn that's ready to enjoy within weeks.
Plenty of people can unroll turf. What makes a lawn stay level, drain well and stay green for years is the preparation underneath — and that's where a professional greenkeeping background makes the difference.
Every turfing job we take on across North Leeds gets the same treatment: the old surface stripped out, the ground cultivated and graded, screened topsoil added where it's needed and the seedbed firmed and raked to a true level before a single roll is laid.
Photos from our own jobs across Leeds — this is exactly what happens between your first call and the finished lawn.

We come out, measure the area, check levels, drainage and access, and talk through what you want from the lawn. You'll get a clear, itemised quote — turf, topsoil, preparation and removal — with no obligation.

The old lawn, weeds, stumps or debris are stripped out and taken away. We then rotavate the ground to break up compaction, open the soil structure and give the new roots somewhere to go.

Levels are set and the ground is raked and graded to fall correctly away from the house and paving. This is where dips, humps and puddling get engineered out — before they can ever become a problem.

Screened topsoil is added where the existing soil is thin or poor, then the whole area is heeled and firmed, raked to a fine tilth and treated with a pre-turf fertiliser to help the turf root in fast.

Fresh cultivated turf is laid the day it's delivered, in a staggered brickwork pattern with tight joints, worked from boards so the seedbed is never walked on. Edges are cut clean to paths, borders and paving.

The new lawn is watered in thoroughly so the turf beds down into the soil, and the site is left spotless. You get simple written aftercare — how much to water, when to first cut and when it's ready to use.
Real jobs, real graft — from bare soil to a brand new lawn.

Whether you're replacing a worn-out lawn, turfing a new-build garden that's been left as rubble and builders' sand, or finishing a landscaping project with a lush green centrepiece, Apex Landscapes lay lawns that last. We supply and lay premium cultivated turf for front gardens, back gardens, side strips and larger grounds throughout Leeds.
New-build plots in and around Leeds are notorious for compacted subsoil, buried rubble and poor drainage. We strip and cultivate the ground, remove debris, bring in screened topsoil and set proper falls so the lawn doesn't sink or sit wet — the groundwork that developer-laid turf usually skips.
If your lawn is beyond saving — more moss and weed than grass, badly uneven, or damaged by pets, building work or years of neglect — a full re-turf is often the quickest route to a lawn you're proud of. Not sure whether to re-turf or renovate? Take a look at our lawn renovation packages — we'll tell you honestly which is right for your garden at the site visit.
We lay turf across the north of Leeds and surrounding villages, including:
Turf can be laid almost all year round, but spring and autumn are ideal — the ground is warm and moist, so roots knit down quickly with less watering. Summer turfing works well too as long as the new lawn is watered daily in dry spells. We avoid laying onto frozen or waterlogged ground.
Most domestic lawns are stripped, prepared and turfed in one to three days depending on size, access and how much clearance or levelling is needed. We'll give you an accurate timeline with your quote.
Keep off the lawn for around two to three weeks while the roots establish — gently lift a corner and if it resists, it has rooted. Light use is fine after that, and it's ready for the first light cut once it has knitted down.
Price depends on the size of the lawn, how much preparation the ground needs, access and the amount of topsoil required. Every job is quoted individually after a free site visit, with no obligation.
Yes. Preparation is the most important part of a lasting lawn. We strip out the old grass, weeds or debris, rotavate, level and firm the ground, add screened topsoil where needed and only then lay the turf.
